    School Information:

Established in 1939, Belvedere Nursery School is the oldest nursery school in Southern Marin. From the beginning, our dedicated teachers have lovingly supported children through play and meaningful projects—scaffolding emerging skills, fostering self-regulation, and nurturing social-emotional growth. We provide hands-on experiences in a joyful and supportive environment, where children engage in problem solving and enhance acquisition of cognitive and linguistic skills within our developmental play-based curriculum. Our students leave with a lasting love of learning—and often, lifelong friendships. Early childhood education foundational theory is embedded in our play-based curriculum, and substantiated by current research in brain development, creating a highly valuable learning environment for enriched and optimal cognitive growth and development. Our program fosters creativity, stimulates the imagination, cultivates an inner sense of trust and autonomy, and supports cognitive, physical and social development. Through immersion in our play-based curriculum, children strengthen emotional and executive functioning for goal-oriented collaborations, imperative for school readiness and learning success. Our teachers are highly qualified and trained in early childhood education, and we maintain a 6:1 child-to-teacher ratio across all programs. Both directors and teachers work closely with each child, maintaining open and ongoing communication with parents to support the unique needs of each child. Formal parent-teacher conferences are held twice a year, offering thoughtful insights into each child’s development and providing an opportunity to address any questions or concerns. Our school is also rooted in an active and supportive community that fosters strong home–school connections.

Camp enrollment is available on a week-to-week basis, providing flexibility for families during the summer months.

    Admission:

The Grove Preschool accepts applications year-round for children 18 months and older. We begin offering school tours in October, with weekly tour opportunities available through January. Tours are an essential first step in our admissions process, and we ask that families complete a Post-Tour Questionnaire after visiting to help us understand your child and family’s needs. Enrollment offers for the upcoming school year, which begins in August, are typically extended starting in March.

    Class Size:

The Grove Preschool is home to five vibrant classrooms, each serving between 10–15 children with two dedicated teachers in each room. Our low teacher-to-child ratio allows for strong, nurturing relationships and responsive, individualized care. We are also supported by a team of four additional staff members who work in all of our classrooms, offering flexible support where it’s most needed throughout the day. Children are placed in classrooms based on age, ensuring developmentally appropriate experiences and routines. At the same time, we deeply value mixed-age play and provide many opportunities for children to interact, learn, and grow alongside peers from other classrooms. These cross-group connections help build a strong sense of community, empathy, and collaborative learning.

It is through imitation, use of the imagination, free play, and engaging with nature that a young child grows in a healthy way. Drawing inspiration from the principles of Waldorf Education, preventative discipline, and Kim John Payne’s Simplicity Parenting, we have created a program that is uniquely our own and accessible to all.
